12:23pm local time: With just a few minutes to go, I forced the camera to use an
exposure that produced results reasonably close to what it looked like in reality. Our eyes adjusted to the fading light, and even a small sliver of the sun is
still very bright, so we could see perfectly well. But the quality of the light
changed as the eclipse progressed, and became much bluer. We could clearly see
Venus by this time, though we never did spot Mercury.
