12:27pm in the Libyan Sahara; totality begins! We saw a beautiful diamond ring as the sun finally disappeared behind the moon, and then the corona sprang into view. It was pearly white, and clearly flattened at the poles although not to an extreme. Lots of cheers and whistles of excitement and appreciation from the eclipse watchers. We could see an occasional glimpse of bright pink prominences around the edge of the disc, and both Matthew and Sarah reported seeing the turquoise ring around the sun that we were told about in the orientation briefing a couple of nights before. The sky was a deep indigo blue, as you can actually see in this image. It was breathtaking.
